Spanning approximately 12sq km of Caribbean sea bed between Pigeon Point and Buccoo Bay, Buccoo coral reef is Tobago’s largest and most significantly visited collection of corals, from hard stag and the brain coral to drifting purple sea fans and pale orange-tinted fire coral, frequented by the brilliantly coloured parrot fish, trigger, butterfly, angel and surgeon fish which thrive here. ⠀
⠀
South of the reef is the Nylon Pool, a glistening coral sand bar providing an amazing metre deep swimming pool area right in the centre of the sea. It’s said to have been named by Princess Margaret at the time of her vacation in the 1950s; she apparently commented that the sea was as transparent as her nylon stockings.⠀
⠀
There will be no problem in finding a glass-bottom boat to take you to the Buccoo Reef, most leave from Store Bay and Pigeon Point. 2-3 hour trips cost around US$25, and frequently depart at roughly 11am and 2pm. The tours are usually fairly up beat, your in the Caribbean so popular songs are a necessity on the way home! they provide you with a awesome view of the coral not to mention a spectacular view right back over Tobago’s south west shoreline and mountainous inner landscape.⠀
